What Next For Container Architecture

Thursday, 2nd June 2011

Both companies and individuals are realising the potential of shipping container architecture. Recent design projects that Bullmans have been involved with have ranged from a 5 star safari lodge in Africa to a mobile pop up bar due to tour the U.K.

Traditional bricks and mortar has its limitations. Freight containers offer a cost effective, strong, uniform and potentially mobile structure that can be modified to suit any number of applications. Traditional construction materials and methods although tried and tested can lead to drab and lifeless buildings. ISO containers however offer an edgy and fun alternative which are being incorporated into many cutting edge designs at the moment.

Bespoke container conversions can see boxes turned upside down and on their ends, joined side by side or with some, perhaps all walls removed. Windows with double or triple glazing, staircases, lifts, renewable energy, all have been used previously to good effect within projects.

Pretty much any interior fit out applicable to a conventional building can be applied to a shipping container including plumbing, electrics and floor and wall coverings. The obvious benefit with a container is that it can be picked up by lorry and taken from site to site, if a mobile approach is needed such as with exhibition display units or promotional modules. Once finished at a particular site the unit can be returned to a depot for storage. There are facilities for this such as Bullmans in London where not only storage is provided but also the option to have your unit maintained, prepared and delivered to the next event.
